Decreases in sex hormone levels with menopause can bring about a number of consequences in women's general health and sexual well-being especially when levels decline suddenly and prematurely as in surgical menopause. Female sexual disorder (FSD), for example, is experienced by some post-menopausal women. Based on an understanding of the role of intracellular signaling in CNS related to sexual function, ITI has developed several compounds that show promise in the treatment of FSD. These compounds have been tested in animal models of sexual behavior and enhance female sexual interest and activity. Further studies are ongoing to scale up production for preclinical safety and toxicology studies.
